APRIL 2002 BOARD MINUTES

Randolph: Monday, April 19, 2002

Attending: George Plumb, Bunky Bernstein, Dave Jacobowitz, Kathy Davidow, Kasie Wallace,  Adam Spey, Meredith Featherstone, Becka Roolf, Bud Haas

Meeting called to order by President, Bunky at 6:00 pm, following the Summit and Ride.

Summit: All agreed that the Summit was a grand success.

Adam Spey: Of the Thunderhead Alliance (A coalition of Bike Ped Orgs) was present to offer advice and counsel on various subjects, and to request VBPC assistance with the upcoming 2003 renewal of the TEA-21 Legislation. A wide ranging discussion followed:

  1. Adam agreed to return to Vermont to do a ølobbyingÓ training session for the VBPC Board and membership.
  2. A discussion of how the growing bicycle pedestrian culture will help to fulfil the demand for a øsecureÓ transportation system. The Surface Transportation Policy Project (STPP) has identified the 4 RÎs of Transportation, Reliable, Resistant, Resilient, and Redundant; bicycle-pedestrian modes meet these needs.
  3. Discussed the Safe Routes to School programs, and the National ChildrenÎs Bike Safety Program headed by Mary Beth Patten.
  4. Discussed  ways to grow the VBPC, including list exchanges, and finding a person to employ as ED who is willing to take the risks of a job not presently sustainable funded, growing the membership, supercyclist programs, and øpivotal moments of nasty legislationÓ which create a chance to mobilize and energize members to fight bad legislation to grow the organization.
  5. The Board expressed itÎs great appreciation to Adam and Meredith for their encouragement, enthusiasm and help given the VBPC.
Executive Director: George made a request for authorization to spend $300 for 2500 Bicycle Safety Handlebar Hangers, to be distributed to Bike Shops. Discussion followed. The Board agreed to survey bikeshops that had recently been mailed Bumperstickers and Share-the-Road Flyers, to determine which shops merit a developing relationship with the VBPC, and who would actually participate in the Handlebar Hanger Program. MOTION: To Authorize purchase of the Hangers. Approved, Yes 3, No 1, Abstention 1.

President: Bunky requested the Board authorize him to submit grant applications to fund the purchase of 1000 copies of the bicycle safety handbook, STREET SMARTS, to be distributed to bike shops. The Board Approved the request.
